In the Native Diet the diet and activity of our ancestors are a reference standard for modern nutrition and lifestyle.

The Native Diet is a concept derived from traditional Māori eating, activity and the 1920′s research of Dr Weston Price, who after visiting 14 indigenous nations including Māori, concluded the western world must look back at the traditional diets of these people groups for the future health of the next generation. Price advocated prohibiting processed foods from diets of Americans, something that has not been followed up.

This new 13 part TV series fronted by Te Kohe Tuhaka delves into the lives of a husband and wife team and three women from a Māori language teachers college, as they live on the Native Diet in a modern context for ten weeks; this means not eating carbohydrates, fruit or processed foods. Every episode in the series also presents historical foods of the Māori and offers a Native Diet recipe.

Native Council’s parent company Adrenalin Group created the Native Diet TV Series for Māori Television.  It is set for it’s first broadcast on Maori TV 4:30pm Saturdays starting from 20th October 2012, so to keep up to date join the Facebook page for Native Diet. or visit the website www.nativediet.co.nz.
